While daily life continues on the street level of Ottawa’s downtown core, three roadheaders are underground mining the O-Train Confederation Line tunnel. On average these roadheaders are working 15 metres below the surface.
Each of these giants measure 20 metres in length and weigh 135 tonnes. That’s more than the combined weight of 112 cars. Their “cutterheads” contain 78 picks that grind away at the rock which is then loaded onto the roadheader’s conveyor belt.
